Falconry is regulated under both federal and
state laws. All falcons in the United States are protected, you must have a
permit to even possess raptor feathers.
Here is some starting falconry information. If you want to become a falconer
you must first obtain a falconry license by passing a written exam on
biology, training, and veterinary aspects of raptors. Next you will need
someone with a master falconry license to be your sponsor though your two
year apprenticeship. Then you must build a suitable home for your falcon and
equipment, which will approximately cost 1,000 dollars. This all needs to be
inspected by a Game and Fish representative. You then become a licensed
falconer and pay a state fee. For more falconry information and regulations,
contact your state game and fish department.
There are many things that you will for your bird. Proper food ( the cost is
about a dollar a day), water and supervision is required for the falcon.
Most of all you need time, a lot of time is required to own a falcon. This
may seem like a huge work load, it is worth it, ask any falconer.
